Targeting MRSA: The Clorox Total 360 System

The Clorox Total 360 System enables superior surface coverage and helps healthcare facilities clean and disinfect faster and more efficiently.

The Clorox Total 360 System is now available to healthcare facilities across the spectrum of care. The announcement was made by the Clorox Professional Products Company at the Association for the Healthcare Environment (AHE) EXCHANGE 2018 annual conference in September.

While experts agree that thorough cleaning and disinfection of healthcare surfaces and equipment is essential for reducing the risk of infections, studies suggest that only 30 to 50 percent of surfaces in patient rooms and operating rooms are effectively disinfected1 and nearly 85 percent of hospital wheelchairs are contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus or Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).2 Using patented electrostatic technology to optimize product delivery, the Clorox Total 360 System provides an efficient, cost-effective solution to overcome this challenge and enhance environmental hygiene in a wide range of healthcare settings.

The Clorox Total 360 System combines electrostatic technology with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered Clorox disinfecting and sanitizing solutions to quickly and easily provide superior coverage in even the hardest-to-reach places. The innovative system covers up to 18,000 square feet per hour, achieving superior surface coverage up to 75 percent faster3 and using up to 65 percent less product compared with traditional disinfectants per square foot.

According to Katherine Velez, PhD – Senior Scientist, Clorox Professional Products Company, “In busy health care settings, cleaning of shared and mobile equipment and other hard to reach or difficult to clean surfaces and objects may be suboptimal. While improving efficiency, the electrostatic spray technology enables facilities to reach surfaces outside the line of sight, covering areas that conventional trigger sprays may miss, reducing the risk of human error, and providing more complete, uniform surface coverage.”

Velez adds that the Clorox Total 360 System was specifically developed to address one of the toughest facility maintenance challenges: how to do more with less, without sacrificing efficacy. “This technology is a great asset both for infection prevention and facility maintenance more generally because it enables greater efficiency and superior surface coverage in large, multi-functional, high-traffic facilities.”

According to Velez, this technology also enhances thoroughness and efficacy by enabling facilities to reach surfaces outside the line of sight where conventional trigger sprays may miss, reducing the risk of human error and providing more complete, uniform surface coverage. “This makes the Clorox Total 360 System an ideal solution for many large and difficult-to-clean spaces, surfaces and objects found in a variety of healthcare settings including acute care facilities, Emergency Medical Services, long-term care and assisted living, outpatient settings, rehabilitation and physical therapy facilities, and more,” explains Velez.

Designed for efficient, comprehensive surface treatment and broad surface compatibility, the Clorox Total 360 System can be used to treat surfaces in patient care areas, disinfect wheelchairs and other mobile equipment and improve environmental hygiene in large areas and high-traffic public spaces such as waiting rooms, hallways and rehab units.

Velez adds that research suggests that shared portable equipment may be a significant and underappreciated vehicle for the spread of pathogens in healthcare facilities. “Studies have also shown that hospital floors are often contaminated with harmful pathogens, and even if people don’t directly touch the floors, other things that patients, visitors, and staff routinely touch are in contact with the floor,” explains Velez.

“Take wheelchairs for example,” says Velez. “When you think about all the places that wheelchairs travel throughout healthcare facilities and about the high levels of contact involved, with healthcare providers and visitors pushing them and patients touching the wheels with their hands, it’s easy to see the risk. The Clorox Total 360 System makes it fast and easy to address surfaces and equipment like wheelchairs that are otherwise difficult to clean, helping reduce the risk of contamination and pathogen transmission.”

It’s also important to remember that not all electrostatic spray systems are created equal. Efficacy is dependent not only on the spray technology, but on the products used. Where other companies sell just the device, the Clorox Total 360 System provides a comprehensive solution – superior coverage of trusted, scientifically-proven Clorox disinfecting and sanitizing solutions delivered through patented electrostatic spray technology – that enables commercial facilities to do much more, much faster and with much less. Velez notes that the electrostatic sprayer is Underwriters Laboratories (UL)-Listed (meets Underwriters Laboratories Standards for Safety), has been rigorously tested with the Clorox-approved products, and meets Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards when appropriate exposure controls and protective equipment is used.

“Backed by the power of Clorox disinfecting and sanitizing solutions, the Clorox Total 360 System has the potential to significantly improve environmental hygiene in hard-to-reach and difficult-to-clean spaces,” said Kristina Vannoni, Associate Director – Marketing, Clorox Professional Products Company. “We are proud to offer this innovative solution to healthcare settings where it can help deliver even cleaner, safer spaces and a healthier environment of care.”
